Buying Out-of-State

At Used Car Genius, our mission is not only to provide customers with the most reliable used cars at affordable prices, but also to make sure that the process of buying from our dealership is both simple and problem-free. We especially take care of those who come from out of state to visit our location in West Warwick, Rhode Island. Since RI is such a small state that borders both Massachusetts and Connecticut, we expect many of our shoppers to come from those two states. We want to make sure these residents understand that the process of buying out of state isn’t as complex as they might think. We are a full-fledged dealership, so you can rest assured that we will provide you with the necessary information you’ll need to get your vehicle back home hassle-free. To get started, here are some helpful tips on what to expect when buying a car out of state.

Which Sales Tax Do I Pay?

This is one of the most common concerns for out-of-state buyers. The good news is that the answer is simple: the only sales tax you’ll pay is the that of your home state. Many people are under the impression that you have to pay double the sales tax when you buy out of state, but this is entirely false. If you happen to fall in love with a car at our dealership, there’s no reason to feel as though getting your hands on it will be more trouble than if you bought something closer to home: the amount of sales tax you pay will be the same either way.

Emissions Standard

Every state has their own emissions standards, with California maintaining the strictest. As a result, most states, including RI, MA, and CT, only sell vehicles that meet CA’s strict regulations. Since these same states are now in compliance with the California Air Resources Board (CARB), all of the cars, trucks, and SUVs on our lot are required to meet CARB’s emissions standards. Not only that, but because RI complies with these standards, our vehicles will be able to pass inspections in all fifty states, whereas if you bought a car in New Hampshire – a state that does not comply with CARB – it might not pass.
